Delay of Trump's arraignment due to lack of local lawyer unlikely: legal expert
June 12, 2023
Analysts have spent most of Monday fearful that Donald Trump will be able to delay his arraignment because he doesn't have a lawyer on the Florida Bar. Trump is known for searching for delays for legal challenges, and analysts voiced concern that the lawyer problem was just another attempt by him to slow progress.
But, speaking to MSNBC on Monday, former impeachment lawyer Robert Ray doesn't think that it will be a problem.
"Todd Blanche will ultimately be admitted if he's not already admitted before the Florida Bar pro hoc vice in a federal court in connection with a criminal proceeding in Florida, so that's not really a question," said Ray. "It would be advisable, and it's almost always the case, that you also have local counsel with you. But that's not necessary. He will likely have local counsel. I imagine he'll have local counsel by the time of the arraignment tomorrow on Tuesday."
He said that he understands why people are talking about the possibility of the arraignment being postponed until Trump does get a Florida lawyer, but he doesn't think it's likely to happen.
"I don't think it's in the president's interest to have the need for more than one appearance when one appearance will do just fine," continued Ray. "So I would think that they would rather avoid having to come back."
MSNBC host Katy Tur agreed, noting that having another arraignment likely wouldn't be the best image for the former president.
