President Donald Trump just "said the quiet part out loud" when it comes to attacks on his own supporters, a Democratic lawmaker said over the weekend.
US HouseBudget Committee Ranking Member Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) appeared on MSNBC on Saturday, where he was asked about Trump's comments claiming that SNAP benefits expiring will mostly affect Democrats.
"They're hurting their own people," Trump claimed without citing evidence.
"Well, you know, Donald Trumprevealed in that answer, hetends to say the quiet partsout loud, by the way. And thiswas another instance of that," Boyle said. "Donald Trump and other Republicans in congressgenuinely believe that mostpoor people in this countrylive in urban areas, aren'twhite and vote democratic, whenin reality two thirds of thosestates that are most dependenton SNAP are red states."
He added, "Thereare states that happen to havelarge rural areas, ruralcounties, by the way, thattended to vote by 2 to 1 marginfor Donald Trump."
"So, you know, their malice toward poor peoplein this country is awful, butit's also ill informed becausethey're hurting a lot of poorfolks who are both Democrats, Republicans as well asindependents and nonvoters," Boyle said. "Wehave to stop looking at thembased on partisanship andrecognize these are our fellowAmericans who are hurting, andthey are being hurt by Donald Trump and the Republicanmajority."
