Trump blows the lid off ‘covert program’ in Syria with tweet attacking ‘fabricated’ Washington Post story

President Donald Trump's Twitter account has gotten him into trouble again.

A 10:30 p.m. EST tweet from the president attacked a Washington Post story as part of his ongoing war with the media. In doing so, however, he confirmed a covert operation by the CIA, The Independent reported.

“The Amazon Washington Post fabricated the facts on my ending massive, dangerous, and wasteful payments to Syrian rebels fighting Assad,” Trump wrote in one tweet.

The story was one from last week that detailed the phase-out of a covert program under former President Barack Obama's administration. It aimed to have the CIA arm and train Syrian rebels fighting back against President Bashar Al-Assad in the ongoing civil war. The Russian government has long opposed the U.S. program and Trump has opted to end the program ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 meeting.

No comment came from the White House when the story ran last week, but this week, Trump took to Twitter to talk about it.

U.S. Special Operations Commander Tony Thomas accidentally confirmed the program was shut down during his remarks Friday at a national security forum in Colorado, and he immediately began to walk his comments back, according to Politico.

Trump, however, blew the lid off in one tweet.

"If the media reports are true, the President of the United States just confirmed a CIA covert action program. On Twitter," former CIA staffer Ned Price tweeted.
