President-elect Donald Trump on Monday used Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation to once again taunt America's northern neighbor about potentially "merging" with the United States.
"Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State," Trump wrote on his Truth Social page. "The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!"
In reality, the idea of merging with the United States is extremely unpopular among Canadians.
Recent polling from Research Co. found that only a tiny minority of Canadians would want to merge with the United States, which has higher crime and vastly more expensive health care than their own nation.

What's more, if Canada really did merge with the United States, it would likely be a massive blue state that could hurt Republicans' electoral college chances.
A survey conducted by the polling firm Leger last fall found that 64 percent of Canadians would back Harris if they had the right to vote in U.S. elections, while only 21 percent would have backed Trump.
Even among Canadians who planned to support the Conservative Party in upcoming elections, Trump only bested Harris by three points, suggesting that there is little appetite for MAGA even in right-wing Canada.
