'Increasingly pathetic' Trump 'clings to lies like Linus with the blanket': CNN political analyst

A CNN panel on Tuesday panned former President Donald Trump's performance during an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier.
In addressing the interview, CNN political analyst John Avlon noted that Trump keeps shifting his rationales for refusing to turn over top-secret government documents he had stashed at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
Whereas Trump had previously claimed that he had every right to retain nuclear secrets, on Monday night he suggested that he simply did not have time to sort through the boxes to separate out personal items from some of the nation's most sensitive national security secrets.
"He keeps trying out different lies and different contexts because that's what he does all the time," remarked Avlon. "What he does in that interview is a man unspooling, desperately trying to play defense against what I think he still thought would be a friendly interview, but was fact checking him in real time. He just clings to his lies like Linus with the blanket. It's all he's got. The con man looks increasingly pathetic when he does that because it's contradicted by every established fact."

Criminal defense attorney Stacey Richman, meanwhile, told CNN that Trump was doing the exact opposite of what any competent lawyer would want to see their client doing by floating new defenses on a nationally televised Fox News interview.
"He is making the case harder and harder for his counsel because the counsel may have a theory of how to proceed and Trump is constantly shifting because he constantly throws out a new theory," she said. "This is a very dangerous situation. He is not a good client."
