Trump criminal investigation to continue after Manhattan DA Cy Vance leaves office
Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, Jr. will leave office without indicting Donald Trump, but the investigation into the former president's businesses will continue under his successor, The New York Times reported Thursday.
Vance, the son of Jimmy Carter's secretary of state, Cyrus Vance, served three terms as DA, but did not seek re-election in 2021. His term expires on Jan. 1, when former federal prosecutor Alvin Bragg will be sworn-in.
The newspaper suggests Trump's case "is likely to be a defining investigation of his tenure. Vance had declined to pursue charges against Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump, Jr. for corruption involving their Trump SoHo development.
"A spokesman for Mr. Bragg, a Democrat, declined to comment on the investigation other than to say that the incoming district attorney had not been briefed on it. Mr. Bragg expects to be briefed soon after being sworn in," the newspaper reported. "Although top officials in Mr. Vance’s office are set to depart on Jan 1., the Trump investigation is expected to remain on the track it has been following. Mr. Bragg plans to retain the leaders of the investigative team that has been working on the inquiry, including Mark F. Pomerantz, an experienced former federal prosecutor and white-collar defense lawyer, and Carey Dunne, Mr. Vance’s general counsel."
New York Attorney General Letitia James has joined the investigation.
The newspaper noted that during his campaign, Bragg "made a point of mentioning that he had sued Mr. Trump more than 100 times when he worked in the state attorney general’s office."
