Donald Trump on Sunday made an announcement on prescription drug price controls, resulting in mockery and backlash online.
Trump on Sunday took to his own social media site, Truth Social, and announced what he called "one of the most consequential orders in our country's history." It was a price control plan for prescriptions.
"For many years the World has wondered why Prescription Drugs and Pharmaceuticals in the United States States of America were SO MUCH HIGHER IN PRICE THAN THEY WERE IN ANY OTHER NATION, SOMETIMES BEING FIVE TO TEN TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE SAME DRUG, MANUFACTURED IN THE EXACT SAME LABORATORY OR PLANT, BY THE SAME COMPANY??? It was always difficult to explain and very embarrassing because, in fact, there was no correct or rightful answer," Trump wrote. "The Pharmaceutical/Drug Companies would say, for years, that it was Research and Development Costs, and that all of these costs were, and would be, for no reason whatsoever, borne by the 'suckers' of America, ALONE."

The feedback from political observers was swift.
Former Republican lawmaker Barbara Comstock asked, "Can Trump sign an Executive Order lowering the exorbitant prices charged for membership and rooms at Mar-Lago, Doral and Bedminster that are so much more expensive than similar clubs and rooms and 'suckers' are getting ripped off paying these high prices to get access?"
Democratic insider Aaron Fritschner also chimed in, saying, "Some of the wild lies in this are wild even for Trump, which is really saying something."
"As always, the smart ones will wait for the paper which will confirm that this order does not do what he claims," Fritschner added.
Democratic lawmaker Ro Khanna said he supports Trump's "effort to ensure Americans do not pay more for drugs than those in other countries," but noted, "instead of an EO that will get challenged again by Big Pharma, why not work with [Bernie Sanders] and me to make this law!"
Fox reporter Charles Gasparino said on Sunday, "This makes me think the China deal is a whiff. Price controls seems like a big compensation."
