During an interview with Univision this month, Donald Trump said the so-called "weaponization" of federal law enforcement "could certainly happen in reverse" — suggesting that he could use government agencies to go after his political opponents if he's reelected.
Writing in The Bulwark Wednesday, Amanda Carpenter and Deana El-Mallawany said Trump's rhetoric about the weaponization of federal law enforcement against him will be his "next big election lie."
"He is using his fake victimization story to mobilize allies to reject any form of political accountability for his actions and reject the results of the election if he loses — just as they did after the 2020 election," they wrote, adding that people should be aware of the potential for Trump's words to spark violence like that of Jan. 6.

According to Carpenter and El-Mallawany, Trump's words are already sparking the potential for violence, and they cite a recent case out of Texas where a woman was charged with threatening to kill a Democratic congresswoman and Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, who is overseeing the federal Jan. 6 case against Trump.
"Trump’s 2020 lies were aimed at holding on to power; the damage they caused to the rule of law was collateral. With his 2024 lies, opposition to the rule of law is the very purpose," they wrote.
