President Donald Trump on Tuesday made a major announcement about big plans to build artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States -- only to have it almost immediately undercut by X owner and Trump Department of Government Efficiency leader Elon Musk.
As Politico reports, Musk reacted negatively after Trump and other tech leaders such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the Stargate Project, which describes itself as "a new company which intends to invest $500 billion over the next four years building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States."
In responding to the announcement of the project by OpenAI on X, Musk wrote that "they don’t actually have the money" and then followed up by claiming that Stargate Project partner Softbank "has well under $10B secured," which he said he had "on good authority."

As Politico notes, Musk has long feuded with OpenAI's Altman, which might explain why the X owner took shots at the initiative.
"Musk has long been at odds with Sam Altman, with whom he co-founded OpenAI, the company that created AI chatbot ChatGPT," the publication writes. "Musk, who resigned from OpenAI in 2018, has since derided Altman as 'Swindly Sam,' while Altman has called Musk a 'bully.'"
Nonetheless, it's highly unusual for someone so closely affiliated to so publicly step on White House announcements in such a manner.
