'Evil on a fundamental level': CNN analyst blows up on Trump's 'contempt for democracy'
November 14, 2023
CNN political analyst John Avlon on Tuesday said that former President Donald Trump and his allies deserve to be described as "evil" for their efforts to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 presidential election.
As evidence, Avlon singled out recently revealed testimony from former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis, who said that Trump aide Dan Sacvino told her that they were going to remain in power even after losing Supreme Court challenges aimed at overturning the results of the 2020 election.
"[This] is, in a civic sense, evil," Avlon said. "It shows contempt for our democracy on the fundamental level."
Avlon then connected the dots between this contempt for the democratic process and the current rhetoric that we're now hearing from Trump and his allies, such as the former president's description of his adversaries as "vermin" over the weekend and his declaration that he will use his powers as president specifically to prosecute political opponents.
CNN legal analyst Elie Honig shared Avlon's assessment and said that Americans should not grow numb to Trump's authoritarian rhetoric.
"Believe him," he said. "Take him seriously. Take it at face value when he says it. He's saying it out loud and couldn't be more important."
