Georgia appeals court cancels hearing on Trump case — with no public explanation

A Georgia appeals court has canceled a hearing scheduled for Dec. 5 on the state's election subversion case involving Donald Trump and several of his allies.

According to Politico's Kyle Cheney, the order, released Monday simply stated that "the oral argument ... is hereby canceled until further order of this Court."

The order did not explain.

The case centers on charges brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis of a racketeering enterprise to block the election results in Georgia in 2020. In addition to Trump, a number of attorneys and GOP officials allied with him were named in the case, including Jeff Clark, Mark Meadows, and Rudy Giuliani.

The future of the case is cloudy, with Trump set to resume the office of the presidency; state prosecutors are not bound by the Justice Department's policy that precludes federal charges against a sitting president, but legal experts widely expect the case, at least as it pertains to Trump, will not move forward as it would for a regular citizen.

Adding further complications, the case has been in limbo for months as courts try to sort out ethics complaints brought by Trump's co-defendants against Willis, who was accused of improperly employing attorney Nathan Wade in her investigative team while simultaneously carrying on a romantic relationship with him.

With special counsel Jack Smith set to draw down the two federal criminal cases against Trump, the only criminal conviction he will have faced before taking office will be the Manhattan case involving falsification of business records to conceal hush payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Sentencing in that case has also been delayed as Judge Juan Merchan and prosecutors grapple over how to move forward.
