'Huge deal': legal expert calls new hush money ruling a crushing blow for Trump
March 25, 2024
Donald Trump was on the receiving end of another legal defeat this Monday when the judge overseeing his hush money payment trial refused to delay the trial over the former president's lawyers' concerns over evidence, declaring that jury selection for the trial "will commence in 21 days, on April 15."
Trump’s lawyers asked Judge Juan Merchan to delay the trial at least 90 days, or dismiss it, over what they called “violations” in the discovery process, claiming Manhattan state prosecutors violated the law when if came to showing them evidence in a timely manner.
According to CNN legal analyst Eli Honig, "this could be the only [of Trump's four criminal cases] tried before the election."

"That is a huge deal," Honig said, adding that once the trial is underway and getting covered by the press, the details of the case will "bring back a lot of memories that Donald Trump doesn't want coming back."
Honig went on to say that while most of the public is already familiar with the Stormy Daniels story, a conviction for Trump in the case will make him a convicted felon, which could influence voters since the hush money could wrap up before the election.
"And that's a lot of baggage," Honig said, pointing out that a conviction could cause voters to say, "I'm not sure about the guy, but I'm not comfortable with voting for a convicted felon."
"This is happening now," Honig clarified, adding that today was the "last gasp to try to get this delayed.
"I don't think [Trump] appeals this ... and if he does it's going nowhere," Honig said. "This is gonna happen, this is 20 days from now we are going to have the state of New York versus Donald J. Trump, a criminal trial."
