These 'variables' could stand in the way of a Trump romp in Iowa: report

While Donald Trump seems slated to win a huge victory in Monday's Iowa caucuses, The Washington Post's Jim Geraghty says there are two variables that could make that expected win less likely for the former president.

One is the weather, as Iowa officials are telling people to stay off the roads due to an incoming polar vortex — a development that has caused Trump and Nikki Haley to cancel campaign events.

"With the polling making this year’s contest look like a Trump romp, maybe a portion of Iowa’s older Republicans won’t feel the need to get on the road and participate in the caucuses," Geraghty writes.

The second variable, according to Geraghty, are "mischievous" Democrats who might take advantage of the fact that Iowans are allowed to register or change their party affiliation on caucus day.

"So, if you’re a Democrat, changing your party affiliation on caucus day and voting for the Republican you prefer in 2024 might sound like a more worthwhile way to spend your Monday night than selecting delegates to your party’s county convention," he writes, adding that the reasoning behind such a move would be because some think Trump is the easiest Republican to beat.
