MNBC national security reporter Julia Ainsley said on Monday that President Donald Trump keeps his controversial policy advisor Stephen Miller around because he likes his White House aides to be in a constant state of fear that they'll lose their jobs.
"There is another reason Miller has stayed on in this administration and become so close to the president," Ainsley said. "The president realizes that kind of rhetoric and that kind of treatment of employees and officials works for him. He likes that brand."
Trump, Ainsley said, enjoys it when his staff lives in terror -- and Miller provides exactly that.
"He wants people to be nervous to keep their jobs, he wants the Secretary of Homeland Security to be afraid to walk into the Oval Office if the numbers of border crossers have gone up over the last month," she continued. "And that's exactly the position that Kirstjen Nielsen found herself in."
"Another thing I know is that the circle of people who discuss these issues just keeps getting smaller," Ainsley added. "They want to cut out people who might either leak what they want to do or would disagree with it. So he's surrounding himself with people like Stephen Miller."
