MSNBC cuts from Trump amid 'mistrial' rant
November 06, 2023
When former President Donald Trump doubled down on accusations against the New York City civil court judge overseeing his $250 million-plus fraud case, MSNBC host Katy Tur opted to cut from the press conference.
"Okay," Tur sighed, "Donald Trump again sounding again like he normally does, calling this whole thing unfair and calling the judge all kinds of names."
As Trump silently mouthed his take on proceedings in Arthur Engoron's court, and suggested he might file for a mistrial, an exasperated Tur invited NBC News' Vaughn Hillyard to discuss "long-winded" testimony that one legal expert said verged on confession.
"It's a lot of what we heard him say actually inside the courtroom and on the record," Hillyard noted. "Donald Trump gave longwinded, quasi-tangential responses to the New York Attorney General's questions."
Hillyard then made the observation that Trump's threats of a mistrial filisng were "significant."
"Donald Trump took on directly Judge Engoron, suggesting right here upon leaving the courtroom that a mistrial should be called," Hillyard said, "on the basis that the communications between the principle law clerk and judge were not right."
Engoron has repeatedly denied any bias and exhibited extreme frustration when Trump's lawyers floated the idea in court.
The State's last witness, Ivanka Trump, is slated to take the stand Wednesday, despite her best efforts, then Trump's team will take the reins.
Trump's attorney reportedly told the court they hope to wrap up before Dec. 15, which means they'll be spending over a month on their defense.
"We're still looking at a month more of this," Hillyard said.
