'Trump loyalist' Mnuchin is using the Trump Org's same sketchy legal arguments to keep Congressional lawmakers at bay

Appearing on CNN on Tuesday morning, New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman said that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin's sketchy legal reasoning for refusing to turn over Donald Trump's tax returns to Congress is the exact argument the Trump Organization is using to avoid an investigation into their business practices.

Speaking with "New Day" host Alisyn Camerota, Haberman noted that the refusal by Mnuchin will likely end up with him hauled into court and that it is a delaying tactic designed to protect the president.

"Lawyers are pretty clear on where the law is," the journalist explained. "I think what Steve Mnuchin did is completely unsurprising. Mnuchin is a loyalist to the president, and I think that his body language for months had indicated that this is what he was going to do, ever since Democrats took over the House and made clear they were going to go for the president's taxes."

"What's interesting to me about what Mnuchin said in explaining why he is not doing it is, he's heeling to the same line that the Trump Organization did when it filed a suit to try to quash subpoenas against two companies related to the president's financial records, which is these serve no legislative purpose," she added.

"So what you are seeing in the broader Trump orbit try to do is relegate Congress's only role to legislation. That is obviously not Congress's only role, oversight is part of their role, too," she explained. "It's going to be up to a court to decide at this point whether trying to get the taxes is part of the oversight or not."
