'Wish I wasn't defending that': Ex-GOP gov lets the mask slip on Trump's ballot flip

A former Republican governor let the mask slip on CNN as he defended the president for making a surprising move.

President Donald Trump reportedly voted by mail in Florida's Republican primary despite his repeated claims that mail-in ballots are "cheating" and "fraud." Chris Sununu, the former Republican governor of New Hampshire, attempted to defend Trump's claims during a segment on CNN's "The Source" with host Dana Bash, and inadvertently let the mask slip about his own feelings on Trump's argument.

Bash played a mashup of Trump's previous attacks on mail-in voting and asked Sununu to respond.

"Optics matter," Sununu said. "I support the president, butthis is definitely a bad move.I'm very much against mail-invoting myself, and I think it'srife with a whole lot ofproblems. We don't have it in New Hampshire. We have thehighest voter turnout in thecountry. So no, you can't goaround railing on mail-in voting and then go ahead anddo it yourself. It kind ofdeflates the argument a littlebit. So, [I] wish Iwasn't defending that on CNNtonight."

Bill de Blasio, the former Democratic mayor of New York City, who was also on the panel, chimed in that Trump's attacks on mail-in voting could hurt his chances during the midterms.

"The bottom line is these kinds of hypocrisies, this kind of personal obsession, whether it's the ballroom, mail-in voting, [or] the Qatari jet, he's just losing," de Blasio said. "He's losing hisaudience more and more, and Idon't know how they're going tochange course between now andthe midterms at this point."
