Trump wins Michigan GOP contest in yet another step toward presidential nomination
February 27, 2024
Former President Donald Trump clinched victory in the Michigan GOP presidential primary on Tuesday evening, notching yet another win — and bringing himself ever closer to officially securing the Republican nomination for president for the third presidential cycle in a row.
Both the New York Times and NBC News called the race for Trump, who already won contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
Trump was not meaningfully contested in Nevada, which held multiple contests with different candidates running in each, but where only the caucus awarded delegates.
The former president's only remaining opponent is former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, herself a veteran of the Trump administration. She is lagging badly behind Trump in both delegates and national polls and hasn't won a single state, but has vowed to stay in the race at least through the upcoming "Super Tuesday" contests.
Despite having agreed to a pledge to support the eventual nominee in order to get access to the GOP debates — which ironically Trump himself declined to attend — Haley has not answered questions about whether she will back Trump should he secure the nomination over her.
All of this is occurring at a time when Trump is also hoping to install loyalists in the Republican National Committee leadership, including his daughter-in-law.
