MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was forced two times on Wednesday morning to interrupt a GOP lawmaker when she tried to change the subject after he asked her about Donald Trump’s threat to deploy U.S. armed forces to cities for “training” purposes.
During his controversial speech before the Pentagon’s military leadership in Virginia on Tuesday, Trump complained about the “enemy within,” telling the attendees, “San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, they’re very unsafe places and we’re gonna straighten them out one by one. This is going to be a major part for some of the people in this room. That’s a war too. It’s a war from within.”
Speaking with Rep. Lisa McCalin (R-MI) the “Morning Joe“ host asked, “The headline in the Wall Street Journal says, ‘President tells military brass to, quote, fight the enemy within the United States,’ and that American cities can be used as, quote, ‘training grounds.’ I'm curious, what's your response? What have you heard from other members of your caucus to the response of using military against American cities?”
“Yeah, what's really sad is that we have American cities that are this bad, right?” she replied. “We're supposed to live in one of the safest countries, in America, and just compare and contrast what happened in D.C., right, is when President Trump brought the National Guard in, there was, every other day, there was a murder.”
“What we need to focus on, let's get back to law and order and just compare and contrast the Democratic run cities versus the not,” she complained. “We shouldn't even need to be talking about this. It's sad that we are.”
“We talk about that all the time on the show here,” Scarborough replied. “I am curious though, when the law forbids the military from being used for crime prevention, do you have any concern or are there any members of the Republican Party that you've spoken to who have any concern about the president talking about using the military to fight the enemy within and to use cities as a training ground?”
“Yeah, “she replied again. “What is so unfortunate is that again we’re even having this conversation—."
“Yeah, I understand that, but ––,” the MSNBC host interrupted.
“Let me finish!” McClain protested.
“No, no,” Scarborough said as he talked over her. “You were the one who has had the monologue. I'll be very glad if you —.”
“You asked me the question,’ she interrupted again.
“I asked you a question, you answered it. And I'm just asking you a simple question: do you?” he pressed. “I'll give you an answer: do you, yes or no? Do you support the military being used for crime control in American cities, or should cops do it, right?”
“It would be wonderful if cops could do it. Cops absolutely should do it. And if you'll let me continue,” she protested as Scarborough attempted to ask her another question, “The judges should do it. You know who's getting sick and tired of this is the American people. Why don't you ask a victim's father?”
