"Whoa," a MSNBC host said on Sunday as a public defender described Supreme Court Justice Judge Neil Gorsuch apparently criticizing a power grab by Donald Trump.
Liz Oyer, a former pardon attorney, appeared on MSNBC over the weekend, and was asked about the issue of tariffs. She noted that there was "a reallyinteresting argument at the Supreme Court this week thatsuggested that a couple ofconservative justices may jointhe liberals in striking down Donald Trump's tariffs."
She continued, specifically noting comments made by Gorsuch.
"I mean,we won't know until we actuallysee the ruling, but thearguments certainly suggestedthat a couple of judges arevery interested in potentiallystriking this down," she said. "And themost stunning comments camefrom Neil Gorsuch, who is astrong conservative member ofthe court, who made a commentindicating that he believesthat the Trump presidency hasbeen gradually but steadilytaking too much power away fromthe legislature. Congress."
That led host Jonathan Capehart to blurt out, "Whoa."
Oyer further added, "So the Supreme Court issort of telegraphing thatcongress has the responsibilityfor taxation. Tariffs are a tax.And if we need to tariff othercountries, it should becongress doing it, not thepresident."
