Appeals court smacks down Trump request using just one sentence
The New York Appellate Division, First Department refused Donald Trump's request to stop his Friday sentencing after less than 24 hours — and they did in a single sentence.
Trump's lawyer, Todd Blanche, filed an appeal after Judge Juan Merchan rejected his motion Monday to stop the sentencing.
Under the application for a stay, Blanche wrote, "N.Y. Supreme Court Presidential immunity rulings are causing ongoing, irreparable harm by depriving President Trump of his constitutional rights."
Still, however, Associate Justice Ellen Gesmer shot down the appeal.
"After consideration of the papers and extensive oral argument, movant's application for an interim stay is denied," the court wrote.
Trump was found guilty of multiple counts of business fraud after he paid an adult movie star to keep quiet about a sexual encounter with him. It was argued that he was trying to keep the information from voters in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump's legal team will likely appeal the decision to the New York Supreme Court immediately and ask for an expedited decision, experts said.
