Former New York Times public editor Margaret Sullivan is not pleased with her one-time employer's recent coverage of President Donald Trump.
Writing on her Substack page, Sullivan reveals there were two recent Times headlines about Trump "that drove me nuts."
One headline that particularly struck Sullivan was "Trump’s New Charm Offensive," despite the fact that Trump is giving speeches at the Department of Justice in which he refers to his political opponents as "scum."

The second was for a piece from economics reporter David Sanger that was titled, "Trump’s Big Bet: Americans Will Tolerate Economic Downturn to Restore Manufacturing." The piece then raised real questions over whether Trump's blanket tariffs on major American trading partners will do anything to produce domestic manufacturing.
"Why does The Times too often normalize Trump like this, even now?" Sullivan asked. "I have some theories, hinted at above and probably to be further developed in a separate post."
Sullivan has not been shy about criticizing the Times' editorial decisions in its coverage of Trump in the past. Last year she accused the paper of whitewashing Trump's obsession with genetics and his Hitler-echoing claims about immigrants "poisoning the blood" of the nation.
