Former President Donald Trump has no one to blame for the massive legal judgment against him in the E. Jean Carroll case but himself, said former prosecutor Kristy Greenberg on MSNBC Friday evening.
The $83.3 million judgment comes after the former president repeatedly claimed he didn't know who Carroll was and that she fabricated the rape allegations against him to sell books, even after a prior jury ruled him liable for sexual abuse.
"What else did you think of what was not only a winning strategy, an initial win, and by all accounts Carroll would have left it there, had this defendant not so wholly defied the punishment to come back on," said anchor Ari Melber, himself an attorney. "To pick a different example for viewers, it would be like, after the Fox defamation case, got it, we're paying, now let's bring Rudy and every other convicted Trump lawyer on the panel. That's not how Fox News and their CFO decided to deal."

"What I found so interesting is you had the first trial where the punitive damages were $3 million," said Greenberg. "That $3 million included the sexual assault as well as ... the defamatory statement in October of 2022. It was not materially from these two statements in 2019 that were the subject of this trial."
"So why did we go from $3 million in the first jury to $65 million in punitive damages with this?" Greenberg continued. "Look, there's different jurors, but at the end of the day, the key thing, I think, is Donald Trump's own words, it's like that Pink song, don't let me get me, I'm my own worst enemy. Donald Trump is his own worst enemy here."
"Not only after the first verdict, he went out and defamed E. Jean Carroll again," added Greenberg. "He was holding press conferences while this jury was hearing evidence, and he got on the stand saying she made a false statement. It was stricken from the record, but the jury can't unhear that. When you don't show remorse and don't distance yourself from the vile tweets, the punitive damages goes up. He has nobody to blame but himself."
