Trump-picked GOP chair insists Mitt Romney was never against the president: 'Don't think he's a Never Trumper'

Republican National Committee (RNC) chair Ronna Romney McDaniel insisted on Wednesday that her uncle, former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, had never been a so-called Never Trumper even though he vocally campaigned against the now-president in 2016.

After Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) announced this week that he was retiring from his Senate career, political insiders predicted that Romney would step up to run for the vacated seat -- leaving some Trump supporters worried that President Donald Trump would have fewer allies in the Senate.

McDaniel, who was asked to drop her maiden name "Romney" after she was offered the job of Republican National Committee chairwoman, told Fox Business that her uncle had never expressed hardcore opposition to Trump.

"Mitt Romney would be for the tax cuts," she explained. "I think he's going to work with this administration. And we want that seat to be Republican. And I think that Mitt has every interest in working with this president, continuing to move forward in an agenda that helping to grow our economy, keep our unemployment rates low, rebuild our military, taking care of our veterans."

"So, you don't think Mitt Romney is a Never Trumper?" Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo asked, referring to Republicans who said that they would never vote for Donald Trump.

"I don't think he's a Never Trumper," McDaniel said. "Mitt seriously considered taking the secretary of state position. He wants to see President Trump do well."

In fact, Romney spoke out against Trump repeatedly during the 2016 campaign, making him one of the most high profile Republicans to do so.
