Speaking to CNN International, former ethics czar and impeachment lawyer Norm Eisen was asked whether Donald Trump could end up behind bars. Trump may be found guilty. But, would he go to prison?
It's a question that continues to surface. How would it work? Would he be afforded Secret Service protection if he's in jail?
While previous laws gave former presidents protection for ten years, that has changed in recent years.
CNN International host John Vause asked what would happen if a president went to prison.
"John, having worked in the White House, worked regularly with the Secret Service, and knowing the law and the procedures, even if he's convicted, he will get his secret service protection should he serve a term of incarceration. He will probably need that more in prison than he does outside. So yes, I believe that he will get that protection."
Stories surfaced about former Trump campaign manager, Paul Manafort, who was in Northern Neck, a northern Virginia jail awaiting trial. He had his own private cell area. He wasn't forced to wear a uniform. He also got his own bathroom and shower facility, a personal telephone and a workspace. He said that he was treated like a VIP. Manafort later complained it was too far for people to drive to see him, so the federal judge threw him in a harsher Alexandria, Virginia prison where his perks were removed.
Unlike other Americans, Trump could end up in a safe and happy place, even if he's found guilty of federal crimes.
