President Donald Trump drew instant mockery on Thursday thanks to his ill-informed all-caps Truth Social rant in which he alleged USAID had "stollen" money from taxpayers.
In his post, Trump falsely claimed that USAID paid $8 million to the publication Politico, when in reality any government expenditures on Politico have been from multiple departments and elected officials who subscribe to the publication's Politico Pro service.
As explained by journalist Justin Baragona on BlueSky, "Multiple government agencies and departments (not just USAID) purchased subscriptions to Politico Pro over the years."
Baragona also added that "while Politico has received $8.1 million from the government over the past 9 years for subscriptions to its services, only $44,000 of that came from USAID. This is equivalent to any company purchasing newspaper subscriptions or 'pro' access for its employees."

NBC News' Mike Hixenbaugh similarly poured cold water on the claims being made by Trump in his post.
"Federal agencies buying subscriptions to a platform that provides wonky insights and analysis on federal policy is — objectively — not the biggest scandal in history," he commented.
In addition to criticizing the factual inaccuracies in Trump's post, the president's opponents also ridiculed him for once again mixing up the word "stolen" with "stollen," which is a type of fruit bread popular in Germany.
"USAid now in the cake-making business," joked author Mark Chadbourn.
"Again with 'STOLLEN,'" designer George Estereich wrote in response to Chadbourn's posts. "4 more years of this ignoramus."
"'BILLIONS STOLLEN'—Trump can’t even spell his own conspiracy theories," marveled entrepreneur H. John Tran.
And a BlueSky account that simply goes by the name of SonarMan responded to Trump's new post by writing, "Grandpa Poopypants is having a morning."
