Washington Post reporter Phil Bump calculated just how many people will ultimately go to prison as a result of former President Donald Trump's inability to accept his election loss in 2020.
In the analysis, Bump cited the majority of the "650 people federally charged in the riot [who] were not part of far-right groups or premeditated conspiracies to attack the Capitol." About 573 of those weren't associated with the extremist groups.
While the FBI hasn't concluded its investigations and will likely announce more arrests, the outcome could be hundreds who go to jail for what has become known as "the big lie."
Bump also cited a recent poll showing that about 30 percent of Americans (almost exclusively Republicans) believe that the 2020 election was stolen. There are 40 percent who believe that political violence may be required in the future, which calculates out to about 1 in 9 Americans.
While those 1 in 9 Americans aren't likely to actually attack the United States, that number is remarkably high at over 30 million people.
It isn't Trump's first time, during his campaign he encouraged his supporters to beat protesters, claiming he would pay their legal bills. He never made good on the promise.
Bump also cites the ongoing promotion of violence by Republican officials like Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
He closed by asking, "more importantly, how many innocent people will be targeted as a result of Trump's ongoing claims and the fury they stoke? How many, if any, will actually be targeted by violence that Trump and his allies have been deliberate in rationalizing?"
