Trump surrounded himself with a dozen top 'megadonors' on the day of Comey's testimony

According to a Politico report, President Donald Trump hosted a group of "megadonors" in the White House on June 8, the day that former FBI Director James Comey testified before Congress, for a "briefing" on the president's agenda.

The report states that "about a dozen top donors" came to the White House for a meeting meant to "rally support for Trump's agenda." It took place a few hours after Comey's testimony ended, and could have been part of the full day planned by Trump aides to keep him off of Twitter while the former FBI director testified.

Among those in attendance was Rebekah Mercer, the daughter of hedge fund manager and billionaire Robert Mercer whose pro-Trump super-PAC reportedly ran attack ads on Comey. The president himself was said to have stopped by the meeting, as well as Vice President Mike Pence and adviser Kellyanne Conway.

The meeting, which sources familiar with the event said focused on various White House legislative goals, was led by Trump's legislative director Marc Short. A few days prior to the June 8 meeting, Short told reporters that the investigation into potential Trump-Russia collusion harmed the president's agenda and distracted "from what we’re trying to deliver for the American people."

Though donor meetings in the White House are not uncommon, "the briefing was seen as notable in GOP finance circles partly because of the timing."
