Trump in a ‘tailspin’ as he rages about being cornered in government funding fight: report

Chaos erupted on Capitol Hill on Thursday as House Republicans scrambled to avoid a government shutdown -- even as President Donald Trump called for Congress to fund his controversial wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

One source described as "close to the White House" has told the New York Times' Maggie Haberman that Trump was in a "tailspin" this morning about signing a bill that would fund the government without paying for his proposed border wall.

Trump on Thursday morning had to endure hours of negative news coverage from "Fox & Friends," which normally serves as his personal safe space of positive coverage among morning cable TV news channels. Co-host Brian Kilmeade was particularly aggressive in slamming the president, whom he accused of folding on both the border wall and fighting ISIS in Syria.

The confusion surrounding Trump's intentions on the government funding bill has now spread to the House of Representatives, where GOP lawmakers are trying to decide how to proceed on voting for wall funding.

One Congressional Republican complained bitterly about being forced to wait for the president to send out a tweet supporting their efforts before taking the plunge to vote for the wall funding.

"That’s what the f*ck serving in Congress has come to," the lawmaker told NBC News' Kasie Hunt.
