President Donald Trump uncorked an unfocused, rambling attack on Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico on the tarmac on Wednesday morning to reporters.
"He believes in six genders, he takes hits at Jesus Christ, he's wearing a mask six months ago. Anybody wearing a mask six months ago doesn't get it," said Trump. "And he's a vegan! He's a vegan in Texas."
It's unclear what Trump meant in saying that Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian who talks extensively about his Christian beliefs, "takes hits a Jesus Christ" — which furthermore comes weeks after Trump sparked fury among many Christians by attacking the Pope and posting an image of himself as Jesus healing the sick.
Talarico is notably not a vegan, and routinely eats both meat and animal products. Trump's remark comes after widespread GOP mockery of Talarico for ordering a breakfast taco with potato, egg, and cheese — the latter two in fact being animal products — even though this is one of the most popular breakfast orders in the state. Republicans have pushed this narrative as part of a broader, baseless allegation that Talarico is a homosexual pervert.
Trump recently weighed in on the Republican Senate primary after months of sitting on the sidelines, endorsing state Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, much to the dismay and frustration of Senate Republicans.
The president has frequently expressed the opinion that Talarico, who polls as one of the most competitive Democratic statewide candidates in Texas in over two decades, is a "weak" candidate and therefore the GOP's choice of nominee is irrelevant to beating him.
