Two of President Donald Trump's most prominent hotel guests this week have major business before the government that could net them considerable sums of money.
Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold observes that T-Mobile CEO John Legere and Murray Energy Corporation CEO Bob Murray have been seeking government approval for key deals at their respective businesses -- and they've both been frequent guests at Trump's Washington, D.C. hotel.
Legere is set to appear before Congress this week in the hopes of convincing lawmakers of the virtues of his company's proposed merger with Sprint. As Fahrenthold and other Post reporters have found, Legere and other T-Mobile executives have booked "at least" 52 nights at Trump's D.C. hotel, and that Legere himself had booked a room that went for $2,246 per night.
Murray, meanwhile, is hoping that the Tennessee Valley Authority will opt to keep one of his decades-old coal plants operational, even though the TVA has shuttered more than a dozen coal plants since 2013. Trump this week even tweeted his support for keeping Murray's plant open.
However, as Fahrenthold writes, Murray was both a major donor to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and is also a regular at the president's flagship hotel in the nation's capital.
"At the Trump Hotel, they list him as a 'high rate' guest," he explains.
