US intel sources say agencies failed to inform at least 7 states that were compromised by Russians

The American intelligence community has confirmed that they had knowledge of Kremlin-compromised voter registration systems and state websites in at least seven states as of January 2017 — but did not inform the states of that information.

NBC News reported Tuesday that the intelligence was requested on the behest of former President Barack Obama during the last weeks of his administration. Three intelligence sources told NBC that the states whose databases or websites were compromised are Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin.

"The officials say systems in the seven states were compromised in a variety of ways," NBC's report noted, "with some breaches more serious than others, from entry into state websites to penetration of actual voter registration databases."

Those officials also noted that "no votes were changed and no voters were taken off the rolls."

UPDATE:

The Department of Homeland Security refuted NBC's reporting, calling it "factually incorrect" and maintaining that the agency alerted all 21 states whose systems were preliminarily compromised "in a timely manner." DHS expressly denied any knowledge that any states' systems were "compromised by Russian government actors."
