'Terrifying': CNN's Van Jones says Trump's second-term plans would scare 'Darth Vader'
November 08, 2023
Former President Donald Trump's plans to reshape the government if he is elected to a second term in 2024 are so off-the-wall undemocratic that they would be too much even for Star Wars' most famous Sith Lord, commentator Van Jones argued in a CNN panel on Wednesday following a sweeping night of victory for Democrats in elections around the country.
This comes after weeks of reporting about Trump's plans to turn the Justice Department against his political enemies, replace the civil service with loyalists, eliminate the independence of agencies like the FCC, and effectively line-item abolish any government program he doesn't like — and the mass of right-wing think tanks and activists who are lining up to help him implement that vision.
"I think it's interesting that the administration — at least to this point, and maybe they will — has not honed in on some of the reporting in the last week from The New York Times first and then The Washington Post what Trump is planning to do if he wins again, in terms of the lawyers he is going to put around him, real political retribution at the Justice Department, really those fundamental things, what happens to the administrative state," said anchor Poppy Harlow.
"I mean, I know it doesn't sound sexy, but they're not focusing on those things and they could," she continued.
"And they will," said Jones confidently. "I mean, this stuff is terrifying. You know, Darth Vader would be like, wow, you guys are a little bit authoritarian here, like, this is not so great. They are going to make that a big part. I agree with you, it can't be democracy only. But we underestimated the midterms the power of that argument, that we might lose our democracy. You've got to talk more about, you know, bread and butter, dinner table issues. Democracy brought Democrats out, abortion brought Democrats out."
"I just think that what's going on we are in a season of discontent, the Democratic Party," Jones added. "There is no great savior to come along. We have Biden and Biden's numbers are weak and so we are in a season of discontent. The underlying fundamentals of concern that Biden can run on are extreme when it comes to Trump."
