Watch Bernie Sanders and Sarah Silverman tear into the 2016 election — and the billionaires who bought it

In a wide ranging exchange of ideas, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders (I) sat down for an interview with comedian comedian and activist Sarah Silverman to do a postmortem on the 2016 election and discuss what circumstances led to the rise of Donald Trump and where progressives need to go from here.

Recorded at Glendale's Alex Theatre, Sanders touched on how Trump tapped into a racist and xenophobic vein with some voters who are suffering economically in order to win, while hammering the ugly turn politics took in 2016.

Of particular note was Sanders saying U.S voters are turning over their government to billionaires.

"I worry very very much about the future of American democracy," Sanders explained. "Because if you think Citizens United is bad, and it is horrendous, it is horrendous because it forces billionaires -- it allows billionaires to be able to buy elections. You know what it also does? The good guys got to spend half of their life raising money, in order to respond to that. And at the end of the day what the Democratic Party is going to have to do, is that is better to have five million people chipping in five bucks a apiece then it is to go to the big money people."
