WATCH: Bill Maher explains why Mueller needs to hold off issuing his report on 'Russian spy' Trump until after the midterms

On the Overtime segment of HBO's Real Time, host Bill Maher suggested there would is a good reason for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to hold off issuing any report about malfeasance in President Donald Trump's White House until after the 2018 midterm election.

Speaking with House intel member Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Maher asked, "If the Mueller report comes in anytime this year, before the election, then it will be close to over, once he gets his report? But if it happened after 2018, it would be better for the Democrats, right, because they might be in power?"

"In other words, would it be better if the Mueller report came out in 2019 when you could impeach him?" the HBO host pressed. "If it comes in in 2018 when you can't impeach him because the Republicans won't go along with that, doesn't it just then die in the woods? Can't you just stall?"

"Then you get Mike Pence," interjected panelist and former Bush era ethics czar Richard Painter.

"Mike Pence is way better than Donald Trump," Maher shot back. "That is definitely true. First of all, he's not a Russian spy. He's not wearing clown make-up. He's not a complete nut. He's ---- Bush."

New York Times writer Bari Weiss offered, "He's more to the right of Bush, but he won't take us to nuclear war."

"Look, I think we proceed the investigation as expeditiously as possible," Schiff stated. "Ironically, it is the Republicans who are slow-walking this thing. They basically want to put the government on trial."

"That is what you do when you are a defense attorney and the facts are mounting against your client," the former prosecutor explained. "There are witnesses we want to bring in and they are delaying. There are documents we want to see, they are delaying. They are the ones who are drawing this out. I can't tell you if Bob Mueller will finish this year, but I can tell you that it is important that he be allowed to finish his job."
