A Chicago man suspected of stealing a large crucifix from a Wisconsin church and then attacking a local Fox News station has been taken into custody in Wausau.
According to Fox 11 News, Brendan McSweeney, 29, has been taken into custody for the studio assault as well as damage he caused at another local business.
In video captured by surveillance cameras, the assailant -- who a tipster identified as McSweeney -- walks across a snowy landscape and begins hammering at a video signboard with the religious object he reportedly stole from Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Ashwaubenon.
Witnesses at the church feared for their lives as he grabbed the crucifix at the Catholic church.
“I had this horrible feeling that next he might be pulling a gun or something like that,” explained a Nativity parishioner who did not want to be identified. “You see so many things on television and it was pretty terrifying.”
According to police, McSweeney left the church and began his assault at the television studio before being chased off by Fox 11 employees.
McSweeney has been charged in with two counts of disorderly conduct, resisting or obstructing an officer and criminal damage to property and is expected in court in Wausau Monday afternoon.
