WATCH: GOP congressman flounders as MSNBC's Kasie Hunt cites reports of the RNC cutting off 'sluggish' candidates

During an interview with an outgoing GOP congressman, MSNBC's Kasie Hunt cited a report about ineffectual GOP campaigns losing money from the party -- and was met with floundering.

According to Politico, the National Republican Congressional Committee may be cutting off money to candidates who've waged "sluggish" midterm campaigns in the run-up to the potential "blue wave" of Democratic candidates flipping House seats.

“This is the time of year when tough decisions have to be made,” Ken Spain, a formerly high-ranking NRCC staffer told Politico. “There are likely going to be a number of unhappy Republican members of Congress in the coming weeks.”

Hunt asked Rep. Ryan Costello (R-PA) about the report and received a non-answer that amounted to "but Democrats do this too."

"Well, as you well know, both political parties are going to continue to poll through the last week of the election to determine where to spend their [independent expenditure] dollars," Costello responded. "I think those incumbents that remain competitive will certainly have all the resources that they need."

The outgoing Republican congressmen went on to say that he thinks the report was "probably written well before it was published because that's a story that always gets written depending upon which party is in power and those are the kind of decisions that do have to get made."

"Frankly, there will be a couple Democratic seats where that will happen, too," Costolle continued, adding that some Midwestern Republicans "are on the offensive."
