The California fires began ripping through neighborhoods and forests late last week and the aftermath has been horrific and heartbreaking.

In southern California, the fires rolled down the hill toward the Los Angeles Zoo, sparking an evacuation of the animals. The rich and famous were forced from their homes in Malibu, proving no amount of money can stop a raging California wildfire.

In northern California, a town called Paradise turned into an absolute hell as 50-mile-per-hour winds forced fast evacuations with some people escaping with only the clothes on their backs.

According to one fire chief, climate change is part of the reason these fires are getting worse. This time of year should be rainier in California, but no rain has come. Now, the area's forests and wooded hillsides are a pile of fuel for any fire that sparks.

“The fact of the matter is if you look at the state of California, climate challenge is happening statewide,” Los Angeles fire chief Daryl Osby said. He added, “it is going to be here for the foreseeable future”.

Southern California was built primarily in a desert, which worked when water could be rerouted from the normally saturated northern part of the state. But as waters have dried in the north, the area has begun to struggle.

The so-called "campfire" fire has grown so large that it is now California's largest in history.
