WATCH: Jan Brewer shamed for looking the other way while Trump promoted birther lies

Donald Trump advocate and former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer was brutally taken down Sunday morning on CNN for knowing full well that President Barack Obama was born in the U.S., but then standing by while the GOP presidential nominee promoted his birther conspiracy for five years.

Appearing on CNN's State of the Union, Brewer tried to dismiss the a discussion of Trump's birther lies, saying, "President Obama said yesterday we have more important things to talk about."

Center for American Progress CEO Neera Tanden smiled incredulously before tearing into Brewer.

"I have to say that when you, five years, ago, were able to say that this birther stuff was nonsense, and we have the Republican nominee not capable of saying it in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and then says this thing he should have said years ago and then he starts another lie around it, it tells you who you can trust, " Tanden lectured the former governor. "Honestly, this was a lie, this was a lie and he lied again when he said I was wrong, and that was outrageous."

Brewer attempted to defend herself, saying she heard the birther stories during a "feeding frenzy on both sides of the aisle."

"A feeding frenzy he created! " Tanden shot back.

"What do you mean by both sides of the aisle?" asked host Jake Tapper who appeared baffled.

"Well, you had Democrats repeating it," she claimed."They were questioning where he was born."

"Democrats were?" Tapper asked.

"Of course!" Brewer replied.

"I don't know what that is about," Tapper stated before moving on.
