WATCH: MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson laughs at GOP lawmaker’s sad defense of tax plan’s deep unpopularity

A Republican congressman from New York who is not a fan of the GOP tax plan as it is currently written had MSNBC host Hallie Jackson laugh in his face Tuesday morning when he had little to offer when confronted with the plan's terrible poll numbers.

Rep. John Faso (R-NY) was invited onto MSNBC to explain his objections to the bill that will impact states likes his, saying it is not yet to his liking.

"While there are many things in the bill that are good and many things in the bill that are better than I voted against initially in the House, the precipitous nature of changing the deductibility of state and local taxes, for people who way way more than $10,000 in state and local taxes this is going to change January 2018," Faso explained. "We should have phased that in over a number of years to give states the ability to adjust their tax systems accordingly, but that was not to be."

Given a chance to challenge his own party's leadership for shoving the bill through, Faso instead chose to criticize Democrats who have been left out of the  bill writing process.

"Actually, there were a number of things in the bill that I wanted changed that they did change," Faso said defensively. "But I'm frustrated with this process. Frankly I'm just as frustrated with the Democrats. "

"Democrats by not even coming to the table made it difficult to get changes for the high-tax states like New York, but that was not to be," he later added. " I just think what we got to do is recognize many people are going to be benefited by this bill, especially in lower tax states but many people in high tax states like New York that are going to have the rug pulled out from them very quickly on January 1."

Jackson then shared the most recent poll numbers on the tax plan with Faso and challenged him to defend it.

"When you look at the popularity of this tax plan, congressman, there's new numbers out showing 55 percent are opposed to this. That includes, 13 percent of Republicans, 89 percent Democrats," Jackson said as a chart was shown on the screen. "And it seems to be the same argument made with Obamacare, by the way, made to me personally by a number of your party which is: eventually when people feel the impact this will ultimately become popular. Is that going to work?"

"I think time will tell," Faso shrugged causing the MSNBC host to laugh.

'Oh, congressman, time is everything, right?" she smirked.

"That's right" he attempted.

"You think that people will eventually come on board with this, given how unpopular it is now and how much political it is?" Jackson pressed.

"Hallie, some people will," Faso remarked.
