WATCH: OMB Director Mulvaney insists the government wouldn't really shut down because offices close on the weekend

In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer filmed just six hours before the government faced a shutdown amid Senate budget negotiations, the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget claimed the shutdown might have some "flexibility" due to its timing.

"We're in a weekend, so we get a little bit more flexibility here," Mulvaney insisted at the beginning of the segment.

Towards the end of his interview, the joint director of the OMB and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau iterated his suggestion that the shutdown wouldn't really take effect until after the weekend.

"I look at it more in terms of what gets done before the offices are supposed to open on Monday, and I think you're gonna see a deal," he said.
