WATCH: Republican melts down on CNN over whether Trump ‘asked’ Comey to back off Flynn

Alisyn Camerota invited former Republican New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu on CNN Monday morning to defend President Donald Trump in the wake of former FBI Director James Comey's testimony -- but his arguments at times literally made her jaw drop.

At one point in the debate, Sununu got particularly angry when Camerota claimed that Trump told Comey that he wished Comey would drop the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn -- despite the fact that Trump actually said he simply "hoped" Comey would drop the investigation.

"He didn't say 'wish,' he said 'hope!'" Sununu objected.

"OK, 'I hope you can back off this investigation,'" Camerota conceded.

"Nope, he didn't say that, he said, 'I hope this Michael Flynn thing would go away,'" Sununu again objected.

In fact, Comey did testify under oath that Trump told him, "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go."

Sununu then accused Camerota of trying to "spin" Comey's testimony to make it sound like Trump had tried to intimidate Comey into backing off the investigation. In reality, said Sununu, Trump was merely expressing an innocent "aspirational" hope for the end of the Flynn investigation.

"He didn't ask!" Sununu shouted at Camerota at one point. "You see, that's the problem!  You keep spinning it to an ask instead of an expression of an... an aspirational expression!"
