WATCH: Robert Reich rips GOP's Ayn Rand fetishists for their 'unbridled selfishness and contempt for the public'

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich released a new video exposing the risk to society caused by the selfishness spread by far-right writer Ayn Rand.

"Few thinkers have had a more profound influence on conservative ideology than Ayn Rand. Her ideas permeate the highest reaches of the Republican Party and the Trump administration. They've provided the justification for unbridled selfishness and contempt for the common good," the Berkeley professor wrote. "They must be firmly and unequivocally rejected."

In the video, Reich explains how Rand's views gained a stranglehold over the Republican Party.

"Starting in the 1970s, Rand's views gained ground, she became the intellectual godmother of modern-day American conservatism," Reich explained. "This utter selfishness, this contempt for the public, this win-at-any-cost mentality, is eroding American life."

"Without adherence to a set of common notions about right and wrong, we're living in a jungle," the professor argued. "This is not a society, it's not even a civilization, because there's no civility at it's core. It's a disaster."

"In other words, we have to understand who Ayn Rand is, so we can reject her philosophy," Reich concluded. "If there is no common good, there is no society."
