Watch Stephen Colbert's adorable story about meeting his wife -- and turning his back on her

Late Show host Stephen Colbert treated fans at a taping on Monday with a second monologue of sorts after an audience member asked him to recount his first meeting with his wife, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"How long do we have?" Colbert replied before launching into his story, which began when his girlfriend at the time told him that it was time to figure out if they were going to get married. Facing the choice of whether to "fish or cut bait," he said, he went home to Charleston, South Carolina to make his decision.

Following a brief -- and decisive -- discussion with his mother, Colbert continued, he joined her for a local performance of The Hydrogen Jukebox, the opera by Allen Ginsburg and Philip Glass, where he locked eyes with a young Evelyn McGee.

"We realized we had grown up with each other but hadn't gone to the same school," he said. "She had gone to the all-girls school and I'd gone to, essentially, the all-boys school. We knew so many people in common we were incredibly embarrassed ... we took two steps out of line, [and] we talked for two hours."

According to Colbert, he thought that the only reason she was being so nice to him was in keeping with the local custom being a "Hitler of politeness. So after a chance encounter with poet Chuck Sullivan's son, he decided to give her one minute to exit gracefully by turning his back.
