President Donald Trump remained president of the Donald J. Trump Foundation during his first year in office, according to a tax return obtained by the watchdog group the Center for Responsive Politics.
Daughter and senior White House advisor Ivanka Trump resigned from her director position in January 2017, but her father remained at the helm through the calendar year.
Donald Trump has not made any personal donations to his foundation since 2008, with the largest donors through 2016 being Vince and Linda McMahon of WWE fame. Linda McMahon was chosen by Trump to head the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The Trump Corporation donated $502,400 and Trump National Golf Club made a $271,365 "reimbursement" in 2017.
The foundation was barred from making disbursements in 2017 as part of an investigation by the New York Attorney General's office.
In June, New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood announced a lawsuit against the Foundation and its directors, which include the president, Donald Trump, Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump.
“As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality,” Underwood said at the time. “This is not how private foundations should function and my office intends to hold the Foundation and its directors accountable for its misuse of charitable assets.”
The tax return was filed "under penalty of perjury."
