White House flack fumes over McCabe's new book: A 'liar' and a 'partisan hack'

In an interview that aired Thursday, former acting FBI director Andrew McCabe said he'd ordered a probe into whether President Donald Trump obstructed justice, in order to preserve the investigation into Russian meddling.

"I wanted to make sure that our case was on solid ground and if somebody came in behind me and closed it and tried to walk away from it, they would not be able to do that without creating a record of why they made that decision," McCabe told Scott Pelley on "CBS This Morning."

He also confirmed that top leadership at the agency had considered using the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office.

Soon after, the White House issued a statement by White House Director of Strategic Communications Mercedes Schlapp that denounced McCabe as a liar trying to make a profit on his book.

"I just think that McCabe is so, uh, he's not credible in any way," Schlapp told Tim Farley, host of Morning Briefing POTUS. "As we know there was the Inspector General who came out with a report basically saying that he was unfit for his position at the FBI that he's pretty much a partisan hack."

"I mean he is just someone who really is ... he's a liar," Schlapp continued. "He falls into the category of the Jim Comeys, James Comeys of the world. And it's very clear, that you know, it's no surprise coming from McCabe what he's going to push forward."

"So again, someone who's not credible in any way. He's just trying to make a buck off his book and you know we're not ... we have other big things to deal with," Schlapp concluded.
