Despite being buffeted by an endless stream of scandals -- including reports of tax evasion -- President Donald Trump maintains a high approval rating among Republican voters.
A new Pew Research poll might help explain why.
As the Washington Post observed, 47 percent of white Republicans polled told Pew it would bother them “some” or “a lot” to “hear people speak a language other than English in a public place.” Only eighteen percent of white Democrats concurred.
Plus, among white Republicans in the least diverse neighborhoods, 80% are satisfied with the amount of racial diversity they experience in their community.
The antipathy towards immigrants specifically and diversity more generally are reflected in many of President Donald Trump's statements and policy positions. Despite being married to an immigrant with a heavy accent, the President continues to broadcast anti-immigration sentiment.
Even the President's slogan, Make America Great Again, has been criticized for harkening back to a mythical past when America was ruled entirely by white men while women and minorities lacked many basic rights.
As the Washington Post observed, a shockingly high number of white Republicans oppose interracial marriage, close to half a century after it was legalized with the Loving v. Virginia case.
"Republicans also stood out in that survey for their skepticism of interracial marriage: One-third said “the fact that more people of difference races are marrying each other” was good for the country, while 16 percent said it was bad," the Post notes.
