'It will happen again': GOP analyst explains why mass shootings are a 'feature of American life'

Responding to news that an active shooter has opened fire at YouTube headquarters just south of San Francisco, MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace and GOP analyst Steve Schmidt acknowledged that it was difficult to return to the typical news of the day in the wake of what may become another gun-related tragedy.

"One of the features of American life is the certainty to know that at any moment on any day, anywhere in America, this can happen," Schmidt, who along with Wallace used to live in Silicon Valley, said.

The GOP operative went on to note that every time he sees breaking news about a shooter, he feels a "sense of helplessness."

"The sick feeling that they said we've got some breaking news and my first thought was 'is it a shooting or a natural disaster?'" Wallace said.

"How many?" Schmidt mused, noting that he often worries shootings involve schoolchildren like this year's massacre in Parkland or the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut elementary school shooting.

"It will happen again," he concluded. "And it will happen many times more over the course of 2018."
