GOP moves to impeach battleground state's top election official who was targeted by conspiracy theorists

The Wisconsin Senate's GOP president called for the impeachment of the state's nonpartisan top elections official as Democrats work to reverse a Senate vote to fire her, according to reports.

Senate President Chris Kapenga wrote in a letter that Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe's actions “could rise to the level of corrupt conduct in office," WMTV reported.

"The bipartisan elections commission, which consists of three Democrats and three Republicans, deadlocked in June on a vote to reappoint Wolfe. Democratic commissioners abstained to prevent the four-vote majority needed to send the nomination to the Senate, where GOP leaders had promised to reject Wolfe. A recent state Supreme Court decision that Republicans have used to maintain control of key policy boards appears to allow Wolfe to stay in office indefinitely even though her term expired in July, but Senate Republicans proceeded with forcing a vote on her reappointment anyway."

Wolf has been a target of conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, with false claims that she was part of a plot to hand the election over to President Joe Biden.
