Witness: Indianapolis police officer 'had no reason' to fatally shoot unarmed man

An unarmed man who was shot by an Indianapolis police officer died at the scene of the shooting on Tuesday after a "physical altercation," according to officials.

IMPD Deputy Chief Valerie Cunningham told reporters that an officer was dispatched to a Marathon gas station on Tuesday night after a woman called 911 and said that a man was hitting her.

"The male subject did not appear to be armed," Cunningham explained. "The first officer on the scene was involved in a physical altercation between the officer and the subject. The subject was shot at that time."

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deontae Hall, 16, told IndyStar that he witnessed the altercation and said that the officer "had no reason to shoot (the suspect) at all."

"He hit him back, but the cop hit him first," the witness recalled. "I would've hit him back too. You hit me first."

Hall said that the officer shot the man "point blank" while they were both throwing punches.

Cunningham vowed that there would be "community involvement and transparency" from the Indianapolis Police Department during the investigation.

Investigators were hopeful that surveillance from the gas station captured the shooting, Cunningham said.
